Because his wife thought he was dead.

 

Rick Grimes protected and provided for his family, was the respected leader of his group, and kept things in order and took care of his health (specifically, trying to not become a zombie.)  He fits the criteria.  

 

And that he does - that a zombie apocalypse show fits those criteria - is a sad commentary on modern TV.

3 of the adult males are widowers.  The other is recently married, but not the leader of the family.  And the only other adult family member is divorced.

 

So, personally, don't believe it technically meets the criteria.  Though it does meet them all in the spirit of the question.

The man is intelligent, has his house in order, and cares about his health
