It's not even a mutation.  It was identified years ago as an allergic reaction to a natural sugar in the tick's saliva (funny enough, identified because of a cross-reaction to the same sugar in an IV chemo drug).

 

The CDC's warning is new, but it's not like there's some sort of alpha-gal tick crisis going on.  They must be bored.
