We ended up with an odd occurrence, at least for us.

 

We have 17 hens and two roos. One of the hens was missing, so we assumed it got snatched by a hawk or coyote.

 

Sitting by our firepit a few weeks ago, we saw the missing hen come out of the bushes with an egg shell it its beak. No idea she was in there. Cleared out some brush, and found she had a nest with about 15 eggs in it. Few weeks later, we have eight new chicks. The momma is amazing at showing them the property, where to get food, feeding them with the fermented feed we create for the other hens, showing how to give themselves a dustbath.

 

We have to keep the other hens in the run because one of them tried to attack one of the chicks, but now the momma and chicks trek out to the run, and the chicks go in and out through the fence holes.

 

Really fun to watch, and we have another eight chicks to add to the run.
