The deal is fine.

 

Benson already passed him & they have Kulich, Rosen, & Ostlund all at essentially the same age & skill level.  

 

There isn't room for all 4 today & there likely won't be room for all 4 of them in 2 years either.  (Plus the kid they drafted this year, Helenius, might be ready for the big team next season too.)

 

Running w/ Krebs at 3C would be a bigger waste of one of Ruff's last seasons.

 

Adams has TOTALLY revamped the bottom 2 lines.  Only Greenway or Krebs will still be dressing nightly.

 

The bottom 2 lines are now pretty much fast, defensively sound, & physical.  Exactly what Adams said he was going to try to get.  They should also be one of the top PK teams if the goaltending holds up.

Didn't like the Mittelstadt trade at the time because they were swapping a 2C entering his prime for a D that's still 4 years from his. (Still not thrilled w/ it.)  But McLeod should be better in his own end than Mitts was and Adams really likes Byram.

 

IF Adams is right about Byram, that deal will look good in a year or 2.

 

But this team is now better than it was when the season ended.  And there's still rumors that Adams us still trying to work out a deal for a top 6W.  A 3rd line of Zucker - McLeod - Benson could be something.

Sabres signed Helenius to his ELC & are hoping he can get out of his Liiga (Finnish Pro League) contract to play in Ra-cha-cha this season.  

 

That would give them Kulich, Ostlund, & Helenius as their top 3C's w/ a few options for the 4C (would guess that would be Kozak, but they could do something else).  Could be a fun year to catch a few Amerks games.

It's a fair deal and shows UPL that he truly is wanted in Buffalo.  THAT seems to be something that is very important to him.  He seems to be an amplifier, so hopefully this show of faith will get rewarded w/ the UPL we saw this past January and February.

 

And if he can't be that guy, there'll be ways to get out of the deal later on.  He only has a 5 team NTC for years 3-5 of the deal.
